N Wa is the wife of Fu Xi and the daughter of Hua Hsu, a primordial being created by the death of the Titan Pangu. In the early days of creation, she molded the upper classes of mankind from the mud of the Yellow River. When she dipped her veil in the water and whirled it around her head, scattering the droplets, each drop became a member of the peasantry. And thus the Chinese people were born and under her protection from this day on.

Before N Wa and Fu Xi could fully establish an order of powers, a violent battle between the gods Chongli and Gong Gong toppled the four pillars that held Heaven above Earth. The ground shuddered and broke, bringing forth earthquakes, floods, inextinguishable fires and many more catastrophes. The skies turned black with ash as humanity suffered. But N Wa was not willing to surrender her creation. She forged the forces of nature into five stones: Earth, Water, Fire, Wood, and Metal. With her wisdom of the interactions between elements, she cured every disaster that bothered her children and slayed every malicious god that confronted her. Finally, she melted down the five stones and used them to mend the pillars of Heaven and restore the prosperity of the Chinese people.

Being the mother and protector of all humans, N Wa has always been considered a very important goddess. The fifth day of the third lunar is said to be N Wa's birthday and even today as an old tradition many people hold an annual ceremony to pray for good weather for crops and a good harvest. Most people call upon her when they wish for guidance, stability and protection -- among them women in need of divine assistance with marital affairs or fertility issues.
